Obama: "The time has come to set aside childish things."

I have a gift certificate at Target  left over from Christmas.  I went to Target yesterday strolling through the Wii games, DVDs, CDs, organization, and office supplies.  I was noting the latest WII games , and contemplating buying a new one for myself.  I was thinking about guitar hero or animal crossing.  Suddenly I flashed back to the inauguration last Tuesday, and Obama's speech.

"We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things."

His speech  has been haunting me since Tuesday .

I left the electronic aisle and went to the book section.  Rick Warren, Warren Buffet, thumbing through their books it seemed like they were from a different era.  No longer relevant.  I had resigned myself to thinking that the only relevant material would be on the web.  But then an entire display dedicated to the Obama's caught my eye.  I had read his second book, The Audacity of Hope when it came out in 2006.  It resonated with me and my views of the world.

Anyway, I bought his first book, Dreams from My Father , originally published in 1995.  I have been unable to put it down since.

2008 Electoral College Prediction

I predict Obama will have a big night, doing better than expected in rocky mountains and states neighboring Illinois.

I invite you to share your predictions with me!  Go to this map to predict .  (Then I did a ctrl+print screen and then pasted into paint.)

I was 49/50 states correct in 2004, unfortunately I had Ohio predicted wrong.

Lakoff on Obama

Adapted from an older interview from Buzzflash, the author/linguist George Lakoff describes Obama's fundamental strength.

BuzzFlash: What does this say about his leadership? Given the pressure of the moment, which was enormous -- what does this say about his leadership, that he came through that and delivered this speech in an unflappable Presidential style? ...

George Lakoff: It says something quite remarkable. It says first he can deal with very difficult situations and be unflappable. Second, he can go to the most fundamental issues behind the difficulties to understand that the difficulties are not just superficial things, and they're not just things to get out of the way for now. When there's a difficulty that the country is concerned about -- that is something fundamental -- you have to address not just the immediate difficulty head on, but you have to ask why this is there, and why it is there at a deeper level. Then you address the deeper questions.
