Steve Jobs quote, 2005

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer is "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something... almost everything --all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarassment or failure-- these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.

DB's Medical Rants

I rediscovered DB's Medical Rants, a medical blog.

His posts seem more relevant to me at this this time in my training.

One quote on his sidebar stuck out to me specifically:

"Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple." - Charles Mingus

If you want something done...

Its as is people have 2 gears, get stuff done mode vs. spin their wheels.  I had to look up the following famous quote:

"If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. The more things you do, the more you can do."

Lucille Ball

I'm finding that especially true.  If someone asks me to do something when I'm busy, its easier to just do it rather than change gears and argue or delegate to someone else.

Parkinson's Law

"Work expands to fill the time available."

Parkinson's Law, I think about it everyday at work.  No matter how many tasks I have in the morning (4-15) I usually spend the same amount of time doing them.  I just spread the 4 out into small detail, or rush the 15.  But I usually end right on time.

One trick I've found to help with this is to make many deadlines throughout the day.  "I will give myself 15 minutes to do research and 5 minutes to wrap up the paperwork on this project,"  I tell myself.  And wouldn't you know it, it works!  This way when I have a lighter workload, I free myself to do something else with my free time @ work.

I'm going to try harder at work to make these things more overt with my colleagues, especially on group projects.
