Expert Filters

Lately I've been so busy at work I have not been able to keep up with all of my RSS feeds.

An interesting solution is to have others screen out the important, interesting information.  In other words, to act as a filter.

Three examples are:
1.  Exploring random samples of interesting flickr photos.
       - I find that whenever I have low energy, or need a creative kick, quickly viewing 7 or so.

2.  Reading RSS feeds from prominent bloggers about interesting posts of the day.
       - For example, CEO of publishing Michael Hyatt's google reader feed.

3.  See what's popular out on the web, right now.
       - I created this last year on yourminis to keep me up to date.

My Daily Reading Habits

Here are my daily reading habits:

1.  Wake up to iphone alarm, read my daily horoscope on iGoogle.

Today's example:

"You may be tempted to keep an important bit of information to yourself today, but it will only stir up insecurities in those around you. It's better to be straightforward and just tell it like it is. Anything that is currently withheld -- by you or by anyone else -- will come out into the open anyhow and can create a lot more trouble when it does. Honesty is really the best policy."

I applied this when I presented my patient from earlier this month to my colleagues, the patient with a large hemorrhagic pericardial effusion.

2.  Listen to Medical Podcasts on the way to & from work.

Today's example:  Advances in Cardiovascular Medicine series, one hour on lipid/cholesterol management.

3.  Read my favorite bloggers on Google Reader RSS feeds.

Today's Example: Jay, Joshua, Michael, Gina

4.  Doing some research on a case report.

5.  Usually prior to falling asleep in bed, reading about one chapter in a book about personal growth.

Today's Example:  Depak Chopra's book, The Third Jesus.

Doctor's room on friendfeed:

Created by Dr. Joshua Schwimmer, the doctor's room on friendfeed is much easier to read than the RSS link of all the twitter posts of the same format.

Kudos.

Podcast: ACC Conversations with Experts

During my Cardiology Ward Month, I am very much enjoying listening to Adolph Hutter's ACC Conversations with Experts.

The timely topics include Early Initiation of Statin Therapy in Acute Coronary Syndromes

and the Update on UA/NSTEMI Management

(I admitted 3 UA/NSTEMIs this afternoon, and 1 STEMI).

Unfortunately it is not frequently updated (only 4 podcasts in 2008 thus far).  However they are a treat to listen to, as they are attendings, and frequently cheifs of cardiology from around the nation discussing real-life patient care mixed in with evidence based medicine.
